How we introduced badminton to Addu...

I strongly believe that physical play is very important for a child's development. Addu was diagnosed with ADHD( attention deficit hyperactive disorder) and there were two options in front of me. One was giving him sedatives to reduce hyperactivity and other option was providing lots of physical activities in his daily schedule. I decided to opt for the latter. So I created a structured environment at home in a way that before each sitting activity there will be a physical activity. So that he would be able to sit and focus on the sitting activities and so he started learning different skills. First we introduced horse riding and cycling then skating, badminton, swimming, scooter board etc. Consistent practice helped him learn all these skills. Everyday I used to take him to practice all these skills with his brother. On weekends his Dad also joined them.

After that we decided to introduce badminton to him. We started by throwing a cork to him from a small distance. But Addu was unable to touch it with a racket because he was not able to pay attention. I still remember,my older son and my husband asking how he could learn this...I told them to give him sometime . Addu was very distracted and was not able to look at the cork. Then we tried balloons instead of a cork. Balloons would take some time to reach him which would help him to hit the balloon with a small racket. Aadi and I took turns to play with him every day like this. So that Addu would become comfortable with the balloon and racket. And in this way we were continuing inside the house. My husband is a good badminton player and so I was asking him to try with the big racket and cork. But he was busy with his work and was not able to do it consistently.

When the lockdown started in March, he started working from home. So I included badminton in Addus daily schedule according to my husband's availability. So everyday they started playing and now Addu has come a long way. This is what helped him to learn how to play badminton. I hope this post will help fellow parents.
