A note from my heart....

A note from my heart..... Advaith was a chubby and handsome boy during his child hood. All his motor milestones were on time. He started walking by 11 months and was playing with his brother and friends. He was a happy and active child. After 1 ½ years, slowly he went into his own world, he stopped responding to name call and was obsessed with cartoons like Thomas and friends. He was showing great interest in soft toys, trains, music. He stopped waving. He was not bothered about people around him. He was not bothered even whether I was around or not. He stopped babbling. He started crying for small reasons. I still remember that one day he cried for more than two hours continuously because the power went off and the TV was not working. We realised that something was wrong with him. After a lot of confusion, he was diagnosed with autism. Once while we were staying at a hotel, he started crying for his blanket at night. He cried for a long time and gave us the car keys to...

Reading and following instructions

Image
Recently I attended a workshop on "Work placement and challenges around it"by Dr. Shobha Srinath (Retd. Child Psychiatrist from NIMHANS) at Bubbles. Bubbles periodically organises different workshops and training sessions by subject matter experts in various fields. I would try and attend all workshops and this enhanced my learning. I would take down notes and after the workshop, I would try and put my new learnings to use the very same day. Merely attending workshops is no t going to help us if we do not use what we learn to teach our kids. In this workshop, Dr. Shobha addressed the prerequisites for work placement. According to her, these include communication skills, daily life skills, emotional regulations, using skills meaningfully.. the list starts from these basic skills.. As parents, we have to give primary focus to the above skills.. I am sharing it here for my fellow parents.. Dr. Shobha mentioned that, if your child knows how to read, teach him to read and foll...

SUMMER VACATION AND ACTIVITIES

Image
For most of our kids transitions are difficult and so anxiety will shoot up. First day of vacation itself I was ready with schedules and activities. So the transition was easy. We can prepare a schedule according to the kids level of understanding. Schedules will help kids to understand the beginning and end of the day and what will happen next and how long they have to do each activity and the kids will be motivated to communicate if they wants to make changes in the schedule. We can use schedules and visuals to prepare them if there are changes in the daily routine. Most of our kids don't know what to do if they are getting lots of free time and that's why unwanted behaviours shooting up during holidays. If we are planning a proper program including physical activities, self help skills, sensory activities, skill training, academics, Play skills and visiting shops and restaurants (for social skills), we can enjoy our holidays. These are some of the activities we are doing at...

I started with common objects, then things used at home ,body parts and different concepts that he already mastered and then according to daily life situations. I tried this method with children who are verbal but echolalia was present and was not able to answer 'Yes' or 'No' questions. This method is helping both verbal and non verbal kids to use 'Yes' or 'No' meaningfully.I am sharing this video for fellow parents. Role of a Parent as a Co-Therapist in Autism Intervention

Introduction I am Smrithy. On completion of Post Graduation in Mathematics, I started working as a lecturer. After marriage, I shifted to Bangalore with my husband and was enjoying my life as a house wife. We are blessed with two children, Adhithya who is 12 years old and studying in Class VII and Advaith, who is diagnosed with Autism. When my son was diagnosed with Autism, I decided to do a course in Special Education in Autism and now work as a Special Educator to assist other families and children with Autism.
